There be mild GT spoilers below.

Okay, of course the M3 will be faster around most circuits than the M2, but has the M5 historically been faster around a track than the M3? E39 > E46? E60 > E92? Doesn’t seem like it. I just always assumed the size and weight would work too much against them. Just checked and the E60 was ~8 seconds slower around the ‘Ring than the E92. Seems either sad for the current M3 or incredible for the current M5 that the latter is faster around the Eboladrome than the former (even if it is by a tenth).

This battle between an M4 & M5 really shows how heavy the M3/4 are.

I believe motor trend has recorded the M2 being faster than the M4 by just a couple tenths on their test track...

It’s the F80 actually lighter than our E90s?

A bit, but not that much considering all the lightweight tech. Like 150 lbs max, if I remember correctly.

Here’s some data (note the E90 is DCT): http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=974479

Yup - on certain courses it definitely has the advantage. Looks like the new GT circuit favors high-horsepower cars.

Thought it was more than that. I guess the extra HP in the M5 makes up for the bulk. I have not driven an F80 M3 yet, but I have driven an F10 M5 and when I got back in my car, it felt slow.

The early reports from BMW on the F8x’s weight were “optimistic”. I remember some feeling let down when the real weights came out. DCT is ~40 kg heavier than manual, for reference, so a loaded manual E90 is closer to 3650. With my primary cat delete and aftermarket muffler, I’m probably below 3600 with a full tank of gas- no lightweight, but not bad. The power of the current M5 is irrefutable - 60 in 3.7 seconds!

well as clarkson said, the track is very point and squirt so yes unfortunately power is going to win around that track

Bummer. I prefer tracks that give the lighter, better-handling sports cars their due.

Correction: DCT 40 kg heavier for the F80.

“E90 DCT weighs about 46 lb more than the manual, sunroof weighs about 40.”

Don’t those M5's have like 600 at crank or some ungodly silly number?

Officially they have 562 at the crank. Unofficially they have 600 at the wheels. Same sort of thing with the RS Audis and AMG Mercs.
